Author: Zane, a well-known African-American writer of romance novels (pen name for Kristina Laferne Roberts), most famous for her novel Addiction which was recently turned into a movie
Genre: Adult, nonfiction, advice
Setting: Modern-day America
Reason for Reading: 50 book PoC challenge book #12
Relevance to the Project: I knew I wanted to read at least one relationship advice book in this challenge. I'm considering also reading Act Like a Lady, Title: Dear G-Spot: Straight Talk About Sex and Love

Reason for Reading: 50 book PoC challenge book #12
Relevance to the Project: I knew I wanted to read at least one relationship advice book in this challenge. I'm considering also reading Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man although from skimming it I think I might find the patriarchal, sex-negative attitude a bit tough to take.
In terms of what I got out of this book and what surprised me, there was minimal treatment of nonmonogamy (one chapter on swinging, and the author is pretty clear that she thinks it's a bad idea) and almost none of sexual violence (just one reader letter asking for advice in the aftermath of recovering from sexual assault, and the author response was very sympathetic but she frankly said she didn't know how to help). I found the latter especially sad when there are so many resources for survivors of sexual violence available these days.
Finished In: Days. It would have been faster but the cover of the edition I had is sufficiently salacious that I thought I shouldn't read it publicly.
Pages: 256
Copyright Date: 2008
Cover: Skin, with a rhinestone G in the middle of the title.
First line: "To all the women -young, middle-aged and elderly - who still believe that we were placed on this earth to 'service' men. May this book liberate your pussies, free your minds from the chains of sexual oppression, and make you realize that you are entitled to fuck your way."
Favorite quote: No one in particular but there were many parts of this book that made me laugh out loud.
Themes and Triggers: Sex, oral and anal sex, sexism, infidelity, strong language. :)
Best part: This book is very funny and readable.
Worst part: There was one reader letter saying that her husband enjoyed crossdressing and anal penetration. Zane's response was to say that he was obviously gay. :( That is just not true, there are plenty of straight crossdressers in the world who love getting pegged. Maybe there's a cultural difference here given the idea of the downlow and (I believe) much higher social penalties for men of color coming out as queer, but it broke my heart. On the plus side, a simple google search on "husband crossdress" will likely lead similar people to Helen Boyd and other helpful resources, so hopefully this wasn't the LW's only option.
Imaginary Theme Song: Until Then - Jill Scott
Grade: B. Most of it was very funny but there was also a lot that was so conventional. No mention, for instance, of the fact that many women cannot orgasm from intercourse alone. Vibrators are mentioned but mostly just for foreplay. It's very mononormative and intercourse-centric, although positive about female same-sex relationships in the one chapter where they are covered.

This book is all about sex and relationship advice from an African American perspective. Some of it is in Q&A format and some of it consists of essays by the author who doesn't seem to have any training as a sex therapist, but who does write sexy novels.I really like that the author stresses communication in her advice. I don't like that she says things that aren't true, like a woman can get pregnant 365 days of the year. (A woman can only get pregnant when one of her ripe eggs and one of her partners sperm meet in the egg tubes. A woman is only fertile a few days each month.)
I didn't read the erotic story sent in to Zane by a male author who is a fan of hers. It was just not my style, too cheesey and not turning me on.
All in all, I would say this is not the best sex/relationship advice I have ever read, but maybe it stands out because there's not a lot out there directed specifically at folks of African descent. I just don't know.
